The next big breakthrough in data centre sustainability isn’t hardware or software, it’s people.

Last week I had the honour of speaking on behalf of Kevlinx Data Centers at the 2nd Data Centre Energy Efficiency & Sustainability Forum 2026 in London about building the next generation of data centre talent. Huge thanks to the organisers Future Bridge Events and everyone who joined the discussion.

Why does this matter? Because the talent pipeline has become mission-critical for our industry’s future. With so many veteran data centre engineers near retirement (and about two-thirds of operators struggling to fill key roles), the workforce challenge is now a strategic issue for all of us.

Talent gaps today = missed sustainability goals tomorrow. If we don’t invest in people, we risk slower innovation, rising energy use, and even difficulty meeting new regulations. But if we do invest, we unlock huge wins: achieving net-zero and energy efficiency targets, building more resilient digital infrastructure, and driving the data centre industry forward.

The good news? Momentum is building. Across Europe, operators like ourselves are partnering with CEDCE: Colleges for European Datacenter Education to open pathways into our sector and show the next generation that a data centre career means shaping a sustainable digital future.
